Review - The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnes

I picked this book because I was intrigued by the title and the phosphorus green cover. The story is about Alex who killed her sister's murderer and how she tries to navigate life in high school at a small town.

Although Alex seems to be the main protagonist, the story also shows how derogatory terms and rape are depicted in the western society leading to girls fearing to speak up. The story is also an experiment. This experiment asks you what will happen if you stood up to those who want to cross the line. But also what will happen if girls didn't report harassment in fear of being questioned or of disappointing friends or making that incident public knowledge. No matter how I thought Alex's methods were wrong I was rooting for her. I wanted her to become friends with Claire. I wanted her to love and be loved by Jack. I wanted her to be rewarded because no matter how ugly the things she did she had good intentions. She wants to help. She doesn't turn a blind eye when she knows someone is in trouble and that is commendable. If every girl and woman stood up and outed the wrong and the offenders, we will all be a little safer and men will think twice before they do anything or they will learn how to keep their urges in check and stop attacking women just because they can. This is a novel that is unapologetic and puts rape front and center on the discussion table. Recommended read for everyone, boys and girls alike.
